Fair trade starts February 14 for 30 days. Participants are being asked to drink only fair trade coffee & tea & eat only fair trade chocolate.

The Need for Fair Trade

International trade may seem a remote issue, but when commodity prices fall dramatically it has a catastrophic impact on the lives of millions of small scale producers, forcing many into crippling debt and countless others to lose their land and their homes. Products like coffee, tea and chocolate, that we in the north have come to depend on, are produced in the warmer climates of the south. The prices paid for these commodities have not risen in real terms over the last forty years, whilst the value of fertilisers, pesticides and machinery (imported from the rich countries) has increased substantially. Consequently many of the people who grow these crops have to work harder and longer for less money. On top of this the market price of commodities frequently drops below the cost of producing them. The low price of coffee in the early nineties had a catastrophic effect on the lives of millions of small farmers, forcing many into crippling debt and countless others to lose their land.

The Development of Fair Trade

Development agencies recognised the important role that consumers could play to improve the situation for producers. By buying direct from farmers at better prices, helping to strengthen their organizations and marketing their produce directly through their own one world shops and catalogues, the charities offered consumers the opportunity to buy products which were bought on the basis of a fair trade. This worked well, and hundreds of small poor farmers were able to get back on their feet and trade their way out of poverty with a renewed sense of pride. The Fairtrade Foundation has a partnership agreement and shares a common definition of fair trade with such alternative trading organisations. But there was a limit to how many producers could benefit with fair trade sales limited to such niche outlets - not normally associated with food goods.

The Need For A Fairtrade Mark

In order to generate greater sales on fair trade terms for the benefit of many more disadvantaged and marginalised producers it was important to get commercial manufacturers involved, and to get fair trade into the supermarket where most people do their shopping. As long as manufacturers agreed to buy from registered suppliers according to Fairtrade criteria their products could carry the Fairtrade seal of approval. In 1989, the Netherlands became the first country to launch the Fairtrade consumer guarantee - the Max Havelaar label. Today there are labelling initiatives in 20 countries, mainly throughout Europe and North America, and the product range now includes coffee, drinking chocolate, chocolate bars, orange juice, tea, honey, sugar and bananas. On sale in most major European supermarket chains, Fairtrade is now available to a much wider public with some Fairtrade products achieving 15% of national market share.

FESTIVAL OF PRAYER

A “Festival of Prayer” will take place in Winnipeg January 20 – 27, 2008 to mark the 100th anniversary of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme for this centennial Week of Prayer is taken from 1 Thessalonians 5:17. The text “Pray without ceasing” stresses the essential role of prayer within the life of the Christian community as its members grow in their relationship to Christ and to one another. St. Paul encourages the community to live out its God-given unity in Christ, to be in practice what it is in principle: the one body of Christ, visibly one in that place. Today the cooperation between Anglican, Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic churches, parishes and communities in preparing for and celebrating the Week of Prayer has become a familiar practice. This simple fact is in itself a strong reason to speak about the history of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity as one of success and a reason for joy and gratitude. The 2008 Festival of Prayer will begin with a City-wide Ecumenical Worship Service at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 20th at St. Mary’s Cathedral,353 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg. All are cordially invited to participate in this opening celebration with church leaders and to experience different Christian traditions in the various services that will be held throughout the Festival of Prayer. A reception will be held following the worship service.

Fair trade starts February 14 for 30 days. Participants are being asked to drink only fair trade coffee & tea & eat only fair trade chocolate.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is an alternative way of doing business - one that builds equitable, long-term partnerships between consumers in North America and producers in developing regions. Fair Trade businesses commit to:

  • Paying a fair wage in the local context.
  • Offering employees opportunities for advancement.
  • Providing equal opportunities for all people, particularly the most disadvantaged.
  • Engaging in environmentally sustainable practices.
  • Being open to public accountability.
  • Building long-term trade relationships.
  • Providing healthy and safe working conditions within the local context.
  • Providing financial and technical assistance to producers whenever possible.

These Fair Trade criteria were established by the Fair Trade Federation.

Be informed when buying products. By buying fair trade, you ensure that the artisans and farmers that make your food, clothing, and other goods are involved in a commercial exchange that is not exploitative. Fair trade only works if empowered consumers buy Fair Trade! So whenever possible, seek out companies that are 100% dedicated to producing fair trade products.

What does “fair” really mean?

The word “fair” can mean a lot of different things to different people. In alternative trade organizations, “Fair Trade” is about more than just paying a fair wage. It means that trading partnerships are based on reciprocal benefits and mutual respect; that prices paid to producers reflect the work they do; that workers have the right to organize; that national health, safety, and wage laws are enforced; and that products are environmentally sustainable and conserve natural resources.

What Fair Trade products are available?

In North America, there are many Fair Trade craft products available–decorative home accessories, jewellery, textiles, etc. Fairly traded coffee, tea, and chocolate are also widely available, and we are starting to see an influx in fair trade produce, most notably bananas. Items, such as Fair Trade sports balls and apparel, are also starting to appear.

How do I know that a product is Fair Trade?

Some Fair Trade products, like coffee and chocolate, are Fair Trade Certified ™ and carry a label or “seal.” For other products, like handcrafts, there is not a certification system. The following concepts are helpful in understanding the difference between certified and non-certified products. It is important to know that the goal of Fair Trade is to empower low-income artisans and farmers to better their lives. This mission drives Fair Trade. Although a label can be an important indicator of this aspiration for farmers, looking beyond a label leads to a vibrant world of Fair Trade artisans and craftspeople.

FESTIVAL OF PRAYER 2008

Once again a “Festival of Prayer” will be held from January 20 – 27, 2008 to mark the 100th anniversary of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme is Pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17). The Festival of Prayer will begin with a City-wide Ecumenical Worship Celebration at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday January 20th at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg. All are cordially invited to this opening celebration and to participate in the various services that will be held each evening throughout the week-long Festival of Prayer. For more information, please see the “FESTIVAL OF PRAYER” poster at the church entrance. Let us pray that this upcoming Festival of Prayer may encourage us to live out our God-given unity in Christ and to deepen our discipleship and common mission —for the healing of the Church and the world!

ECUMENICAL CHOIR FOR CITY-WIDE CELEBRATION

An ecumenical choir is being formed to lead music at the forthcoming celebration on January 20th to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and the opening of the 2008 Festival of Prayer. No audition is required. Anyone who can carry a tune and wishes to sing in the choir is welcome! Rehearsals will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral (353 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg) from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2008 and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2008. A final rehearsal will be held at 6:00 p.m. immediately before the Ecumenical Worship Service on Sunday, January 20, 2008. Women for Peace Community Development Program

Women for Peace is a long-term PWRDF partner. The organization is atypical in the sense that they are not organized as a formal Non-governmental Organization (NGO); rather it is a group of women who came together during Apartheid to defy the status quo. At that time, they were a revolutionary group that brought together middle and upper-middle class white women and black and coloured women from the townships to fight injustice and work towards ending Apartheid. As times changed, they regrouped and continued to respond to the needs of the poorest communities in the country, those with issues such as unemployment and HIV and AIDS.

Please PRAY for Women for Peace as they seek to address the new challenges faced by the impoverished people in South Africa.

Guatemala

Capacity Development for Women

Most women in the rural communities of Guatemala have no formal education and some women leaders have not completed high school. PWRDF partner Ixmucane, a women’s health and birth center in Antigua, recognized that this lack of formal education hampers the progress of women’s advancement in their communities. They started a training program to provide capacity and encouragement with the aim of increasing the participation and involvement of women in decision-making processes and self-reliance. They also provide opportunities for women members to attend international events and participate in national and international networks.

Please PRAY for the work done by Ixmucane as they seek to increase the capacity of rural women in their communities.

Working Ecumenically to Respond to Worldwide Emergencies and Development

PWRDF carries out its emergency relief work through Action by Churches Together (ACT) International, a global alliance of churches and related agencies in nearly 100 countries. Former director Reverend White Rakuba, says this of ACT’s work: “We believe that God’s love for humankind knows no boundaries. As a Christian alliance, we believe that there is no greater way of serving God than in unconditional Christian love, which serves all our neighbours in need.”

In February 2007, a new global alliance known as ACT Development was officially formed. This alliance will focus on long-term development and building on the emergency response work already undertaken by ACT International. PWRDF is also a member of ACT Development.

Please PRAY for the two global alliances as they seek new ways of working together and strengthening their relationships.
