SJCI Student Vows to ‘Think Pink’ in Fundraiser to Fight Cancer – The battle against cancer is on-going, but one student at St. James Collegiate has vowed to make the battle a personal one. Grade 10 student Thomas Stuart-Dant, who plays for the SJCI Jimmies of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League, has pledged to try to raise at least $1,000 for CancerCare Manitoba – a lofty goal for one 16-year-old. But Thomas has gone one step further and took a page from some NHL players – if his goal is met, he has vowed to take the ice next season in his team’s home opening game – using a pink hockey stick! Thomas has had many relatives and close friends of his parents affected by cancer and he wanted to make a statement by doing something that most hockey players his age would not. He was also inspired by Minnesota Wild goalie Josh Harding who has started a foundation to help fight cancer – Harding’s sister was recently diagnosed as well. Please help Thomas reach his goal by making a pledge to this worthy cause. Cheques should be made payable to CancerCare Manitoba. Mail to: Pink Stick c/o 211 Oxford Street, Winnipeg, MB. R3M 3H8. All donations of at least $15 will receive a tax receipt.

Mark Webster Kicks Cancer – Well it is no surprise that the family of St. Mary Magdalene has been so incredibly generous in so many ways, it is, never the less overwhelming. We can only say thanks be to God and the people he has placed in our lives. Mark, David, Bob, and Tannis Webster.

A special thanks to Gail Forrest for crafting Preston's new green chasuble and stole, being worn for the first time today. Beautiful work, Gail!

A message from Bishop Donald

I am very pleased to announce that we have arranged for The Bishop of Central Buganda, Bishop Jackson and his wife Perusi Matovu to visit Rupert's Land June1 to June 11 while they are in the USA attending one of their priest's graduation ceremonies and visiting with his colleagues. At each of these gatherings (see schedule below), participants will have the opportunity (if they wish) to make a contribution to help cover Jackson and Perusi's travel as well as support for their ministry; and we plan on having some "African-style" clothing and fabric for sale - with the proceeds going directly to the Central Buganda Clergy wives association. (These are the women who have crafted the material.). ( for the Bishop’s complete message see the June issue of News for the Pews).

Greetings from the Companion Diocese Team: Several events have been scheduled throughout Rupert's Land to celebrate the Bishop Jackson’s visit. It is hoped that as many people as possible will be able to come to one or more of the scheduled events. Parishes from Rupert's Land that are linked with parishes in Central Buganda may wish to take this opportunity to visit with Bishop Jackson & his wife Perusi & also to send a letter with them to your Link Parish in Central Buganda. Communication with the Link parishes in Central Buganda has proved challenging in the past. There will be an email address for you to use in the near future. Until that has been established, you may wish to take this opportunity to send a letter to Central Buganda.
